He Must Increase

UK Worship Leaders & Musicians' Network | UK Worship Forum | Worship Events List

It's ages since I have done one of my discussions on wired instruments and as someone gave me one for Christmas I thought is was time to start another.

The Stylophone, I was given a new one for Christmas. Has anybody out there ever used one in a constructive way?

How about using one in worship?

Hi Dan,

When I first read your posting I had no idea what a Tenori-on was. Having found a demo on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SGwDhKTrwU I do wonder how you could use it in a worship context. I'm not saying you can't I just can't see how.

Dear David,

Have a little look at this, Little Boots playing a stylophone and a tenori-on

You could use a tenori-on as a basic drum machine I guess but I think you are right - in a worship context it would be difficult! And they are relatively expensive too. I do think in general that we should experiment more with instrumentation in worship though - most new worship songs I hear seem to have a very similar instrumentation and a very similar song structure - although perhaps I am just not listening hard enough! We ought to use keyboards more inventively too - much modern pop music is now keyboard orientated rather than guitar driven and I don't see why we can't transfer this to worship.

My stylophone is looking at me and saying: go on, you know you want to.
