He Must Increase

UK Worship Leaders & Musicians' Network | UK Worship Forum | Worship Events List

At just over 200 pages you might think it doesn't have much to say but wow!
Pete starts be giving us a concise history lesson of the last 40 years and how the current evangelical worship scene came about.
He goes on to discuss how the resources that we take for granted- song books, CDs etc were developed and he writes about the influence of certain individuals, most notably John Wimber.
He then compares the various music books of the last 40 years including Youth Praise from the 60s, Sounds of Living Waters from the 70s, Songs of Fellowship from the 80s, etc and shows how the lyrics have changed emphasis.
He discusses recent events like the Toronto Blessing, Alpha, Soul Survivor and the influence these have had on what we sing.
Finally he talks about Lionel Adeys categorisation of hymns into three types, subjective, objective and reflexive.
Many of today's songs are sung to a "you". He asks who is this "you"? Which God are we singing to? Are they all the same? Does it matter?
You must read this book. Highly recommended 10/10

Hi Dave
I'm going to get hold of this book, it sounds like one I should read. I'm interested in your last paragraph:-
"Many of today's songs are sung to a "you". He asks who is this "you"? Which God are we singing to? Are they all the same? Does it matter?"
because this very same question features heavily in the book that I've just read and reviewed (Worshipping Trinity) - I think I'm seeing a pattern!

Yeah i've got it too. Fairly good book. Verges on being quite academic, don't expect bathroom reading
