Hello Katie

17 is a big group to manage.

I will offer a couple of pointers although in fairness I have played in events with as many musicians and singers as that if not more but the biggest group I have led is 9 people.

Firstly, this may be obvious, but, you need to ensure that everyone can see you. If people cannot see you they cannot see any signal that you give and may therefore carry on playing when you want them to stop or something like that. Now with 17 that may be quite difficult so you could use a relay system. If you are leading you really only want to signal once what you want to do and then focus on leading the worship. Choose some key members of the group who have a clear view of you and get them to relay the direction you want to take toother members of the group.

Secondly, keep your signals very clear. We use about 5 different clear hand signals and they tend to remain the same whoever is leading. That provides consistency which a group needs when a different leader may lead them each week. The clarity of the signal allows the other musicians and singers to know the direction you are heading and lets them feel comfortable about what you are doing.

My final suggestion would be to do all of this regularly in your rehearsals and practice sessions and then everyone will be more comfortable and secure in what you are doing in the main service.

May God continue to bless you

Hello, Wonder if anyone can help here. I am new to leading worship and the thing I seem to struggle getting to grips with is giving signals to let the band know where I'm going. I think I'm getting better I just still a bit unsure about what I'm doing. We have 17 members in our band so it's a lot of people to lead.
