one reason i can think of, which may be contraversial; young people are easy to control and will follow the ideas or ethos of their leaders while in the early stages of the life/faith without little question. They then get to a certain age and two…

I don't think that it is just the young. It happens as well to others. How many times have you seen single people come into the church, only to leave when they enter into a relationship with a non Christian. The bible shows in passages such as Matth…

Hey Paul, that is good, an area of Jesus life that has never crossed my mind. Food for thought indeed.

I'm wondering if there might be some fundamental thing going on here - and you might need a radicalism warning at this point… Jesus' life is mentioned as a baby: the church is good with babies, baptism, crèche and all that. Jesus is next encountered…

yep good point lorraine, im sure this is a common thing. many people do seem to come back over time Praise God, being a teenager isnt an easy period in life at all. God bless, gav.

Oh, this is such a difficult one, that our church is most certainly facing. In fact, most of our youth leave long before eighteen and don't go to church anywhere. I talk to lots of people, from differnt churches, and they all seem to be going throug…

hi seth, thanks for your thoughts. i wasnt blaming it solely on temptations of the world, but i think its a factor. i think largely they dont go anywhere, which is sad. im far less bothered if they go to another church than i am if they go nowhere…

I don't think it can be fully blamed on "temptations of the world", after all the Word says "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." If someone is filled with the Holy Spirit they will take it with them w…

Being hurt is a two way street

I was having a chat with a mate from church a while back about arguments in church.

he said that during a service in a previous church he asked for hands up for anyone who has been hurt by someone in church, loads and loads of hands went up. he then asked for hands up who has hurt anyone in church, hardly any hands went up!

The problem with this is, we're very quick to realise when were hurt but not quick to realise when we hurt others. We need to realise that we

Where are the new Songs about the body of Christ?

So i was at a youth service a week ago here in Bristol, it was kind of a small version of soul survivor. The topic discussed was 'church' and how young people should embrace it and love it and get involved despite it's problems. We were encouraged to love the church and that Jesus loves the church as his own bride.

It was a great talk and various speakers contributed really well.

Then something strange happened. The band stood back up to lead some more songs in response. I could see the worshi… Continue

Who are we going to invite to church over Christmas?

For me it seems more acceptable to talk about church at christmas. we've done christmas services in workplaces and lots of people we wouldnt expect have come along. its challenged me to invite people to church more over christmas. whats the worst they can say? no thanks?!!

let me know what happens!!

God bless,

i have a dream!!!!!!!!!

my dream is this.......

we go to church, we worship God through music for a time.

no one knows how long it is as no-one is clock watching.

people are cheering God, they are dancing before him,

people are being healed, marriages are being restored,

no one cares who is leading worship or who is watching,
people dont care if the songs are old or new or how they
are led, people just want to meet with Jesus.......

people are being saved, friendships built and rebuilt,

some people are crying,… Continue

Hi Gav
I've just finished an excellent book called "Why do men hate going to church" and I've a feeling someone on the site mentioned it not so long ago. Was it you? Sorry if it wasn't, it was just so thought provoking I was wondering if someone had started a thread about it.
All the best.

Hi Gav

Thanks for the encouragement and feedback - it's much appreciated. Particularly so, because when I put the song on WorshipCentral a good while back, and you commented on it there, I don't think I worded my response very well, and it sounded like I was snapping back at you :)

As it happens, your comments were pretty similar to what a few others at resound said too, so we spent some time working on the 'greater than what?' aspect of the song.

Cheers :)

Have just learnt a song you wrote with Joy - Sovereign Lord - some very unusual chord structures there! but good song, she is gradually going to teach us her songs now that Ross has freed up band practice nights for her. Gloria

Hi Gav

I realised that I hadn't followed up on that "moon" thing from the creation etc. debate... I've already posted far too much on there, but I thought it might help to give a quick response here.

OK, I looked up what (I think) must be the article on the answersingenesis site. I'm afraid (based simply on the tone of this article) the site might as well be called www.clutchingatstraws.org. So, yes, the moon is moving away from us very slowly. But the calculation that is up there is nothing more than a simple "back-of-the-envelope" calculation - they solve a simple differential equation (a good A-level student can do that in about 10 minutes). So it's very approximate and hardly cutting-edge science. But, the crucial point is this: they manage to get the estimate of the age of the Earth down by a factor of 3 (from 4.5 billion years to 1.5 billion years). To make the point they wish to make (that the Earth is only 10000 years old) they need at least a factor of 1000, or 10000, probably more. They only have a factor of 3. It made me laugh.

Other things you need to be wary of are the conferences these people speak at, and the places they publish. Both have the word "Creation" in - that is, they are not properly engaging with the scientific community at all. I fear they are doing more harm than good.

Sorry - I have to tell it as I see it. ;-)

Hi Gav,

I have just finished the book that you recommended a while back 'and now let's move into a time of nonesense' , can't remember which thread it was !!
I have to say I really enjoyed it, challenging stuff for people who write and lead...trouble is, our church songlist might look a little short when I go through it!!

Cheers

Hey, No probs, I know that it can be hard. My youngest Son is quite severely disabled and we live that day in day out. I used to think all the negative stuff, Why me / us, why would God allow ths ect. but came to the realisation that if I believe that God is God, then He is always good, regardless of the situation, and some situations are horrendous. The truth is probably somewhere inbetween the two. I love the Casting Crowns song 'Love them Like Jesus'
Stating that sometimes all that we can do is love...sometimes all we can do is love them like Jesus does, show Him to be who He really is, He really cares, about the small things and the big things, He is just so much bigger than we sometimes give Him credit for.

Cheers

Kev
