Would agree with the other comments about the difficulty of introducing rhythmic backing tracks - as soon as you do you realise just how much you naturally speed up and slow down in a song! There's also issues of fading loops in and out at the right…

Apologies for all-to-predictable RESOUND plug, but Sam's latest on the site ('Let us kneel at Calvary') really is absolutely stonking IMO, and ends up at the resurrection, and could be done in a fashion appropriate to communion - the recording gets…

Nope, slightly wish I was going as it looks like they've got some excellent seminars going on - but instead I'm going to a different worship conference! I'm co-leading a couple of seminars at Worship Beyond in Wolverhampton on Sat - anyone else goin…

I read your first sentence, and for a moment I had to really think who your 'favourite Christian author' was... :) silly me. One of my most uncomfortable moments in a resound critiquing session was having a London School of Theology lecturer totall…

We have a Tascam DR 07 at church which is I believe basically similar to the Zoom H2. When our main CD-recorder broke we used it with a line out from the desk, we also use it for other meetings in the church hall etc where recording equipment isn't…

Interesting discussion - quite a relevant question for our church at the mo because we've just got a new vicar who has really challenged us on the whole issue of making services comprehensible and non-threatening to visitors. The idea is that if you…

What if our worship made a difference Monday morning? What if it impacted our mission and intercession? How does God's heart for justice affect our worship? How can we use our musical and creative gifts to reach out to our communities? This unique…

would you believe that's actually less than previous years? :) Though we're also doing an open-air service this Sunday evening - local traders around where our office is based are running a Christmas Fair, we're got involved in helping organise it,…

Christmas Songs!

Hi all, we've just put two new songs on www.RESOUNDworship.org, both of which have a Christmas theme and are available for free download with mp3s and chords. You can listen to mine (On Christmas Day) on my page as well. Here's the lyrics, hope it may be of use to someone.

God bless
Matt

1. On Christmas day, a humble girl
gives birth to hope for all the world,
this is Immanuel.
How awesome and mysterious,
the Lord of heaven draws near to us,
this is Immanuel.

2. The hands that once split nig… Continue

New Song

Hi there,

I've just uploaded a new song onto my page, which you can download mp3 and chords for free if you so desire from www.RESOUNDworship.org. Here's the lyrics, thanks for listening.

Matt

VERSE 1
Forgive us, Lord, when our hearts are hard as stone.
Forgive us, Lord, when we trust our strength alone.
Forgive us, Lord, when the noise of our lives drowns out your voice;
now we make this choice:

CHORUS
To do whatever it takes in the service of our King,
as you gave us yourself, we surrende… Continue

New Easter song

Hi all, just a quick note to let you know about a new Easter song I've written which has just been posted on www.resoundworship.org called 'On the darkest day of all'. It starts in the darkness of Good Friday, where the Light of the world seemed to have been extinguished, then moves into the hope and light of the resurrection on Easter Day. You can listen to the song and download mp3, lead sheet and chord chart all for free here http://www.resoundworship.org/song/on_the_darkest_day_of_all - lyri… Continue

New songs web-site

Hi all,

Just wanted to let y'all know about a new worship songs web-site that has recently launched at www.resoundworship.org . We are a small group of worship pastors and other song-writers who have been meeting together over the last year or so to critique and refine each others songs. We've also been priviliged to have a couple of members of the London School of Theology faculty giving their critique and making sure nothing heretical gets

Hi Mat,

Some time ago I started a discussion about sheet music parts for odd instruments.

http://www.hemustincrease.com/forum/topics/parts-sheet-music-odd?id=988607%3ATopic%3A105246&page=2#comments

As you have a practical involvement as a composer and publisher, I would appreciate you opinion on some of the issues if you have the time.

Hi Matt

Yes, our sevices went well - probably the least stressful carol service I've had for a while! - how was the big orchestra thing?

Yes, I'd noticed my promotion. It was, frankly, unavoidable once you started the creation/evolution debate thing! I had been trying to slow down a bit.....

I've appreciated your comments too.

In truth, I don't think I have read any books at all on the creation/evolution debate specifically - perhaps I should have, but it always seemed fairly clear to me. I can recommend a good general science book: "The Faber Book of Science" is a collection of writing on scientific topics, chosen as much for the quality of the writing as for the science (though that is great too). It was edited by John Carey - a Professor of English! One thing that really has stuck in my mind is his observation (in the introduction to the book) that the real enemy of science isn't religion, but politics. Bill Bryson's "Short History of nearly everything" is good too.

Christmas is shaping up reasonably well up here. Our church isn't nearly so big as yours, so we couldn't put on a full choir and orchestra if we tried. For the carol service, most of the carols are led by the organ. Our group are doing a couple of 4-part pieces (we have just enough to cover the 4-parts, including a very good tenor, from Opera North, which helps). Usually at this time of year I'm busy trying to work out complicated accompaniments to the choral pieces on the guitar (e.g. last year I figured out how to fingerpick the written accompaniment to the alternative (is it by H. Dark?) In the Bleak Midwinter... it required two capos and a lot of concentration). This year I got a pianist in. Much, much easier.

Have a good Christmas.
