Are what are essentially "posting competitions" detrimental to the quality of the forum content?

Do competitions like this one:-

"To be in with a chance of winning just make sure you're in one of the top 50 places in our 'Top 100' members list at 9pm on 30th November 08. To move up the list, simply be an active member on HMI! (N.B. Points update when you visit your profile page)."

Just mean people post discussions for the sake of posting discussions. Please discuss.

I think on here we're pretty good at being serious when we need to be, and silly when we can. Some Christian based forums are really stodgy - you make a mild joke and you get shot down in the proverbial flames.
Plenty of discussions mean that people are more inclined to visit often to see what's going on!; ▶ Reply to This
