Are what are essentially "posting competitions" detrimental to the quality of the forum content?

Do competitions like this one:-

"To be in with a chance of winning just make sure you're in one of the top 50 places in our 'Top 100' members list at 9pm on 30th November 08. To move up the list, simply be an active member on HMI! (N.B. Points update when you visit your profile page)."

Just mean people post discussions for the sake of posting discussions. Please discuss.

Not necessarily. Some of the random 'posting for the sake of posting' discussions can be quite fun. I think on here we're pretty good at being serious when we need to be, and silly when we can. Some Christian based forums are really stodgy - you make a mild joke and you get shot down in the proverbial flames.
Plenty of discussions mean that people are more inclined to visit often to see what's going on!

I must admit, when I looked at HMI this morning my first thought was "what happened to all those interesting discussions I was following?"

They certainly aren't a motivating factor for me to post. However, I can happily ignore them - if I happen to accidentally win something one of these days then I'm sure I'll find the grace to cope with that... ;-)

It's very tempting now to post a discussion thread:

'Are discussions that merely discuss the internal structure of HMI a blatant attempt to gain points or a valid critique of a worrying development?'

But of course I wouldn't do that.

However I do look forward to receiving all the points for this valuable post :)

by the way, Colin, I just looked at how you'd tagged this discussion and did actually laugh out loud. Took me a moment to put the words in the right order though...

Get thinking now about my forthcoming threads!!

What's your favourite colour instrument lead - and why!

Left or right handed - what's best?

What's your favourite speaker covering?

What grade chicken wire do you use when playing on stage at rowdy churchs?

Stand still, or move about a bit?

"An excellent resource for anyone involved in worship music. The video clips make for a more relevant and refined collection than you find on YouTube and there are plenty of diverse but interesting subjects being debated in the forum as well."
