For our Worship on Sunday just gone we chose to play a song, "Annointing Fall on me", a great song with a lovely Jazz vibe to it. I had never heard it before let alone played it and so on our practice on saturday morning we ran through it once for my benefit. On Sunday we played it, only my second ever time playing the song, and I messed it up...BIG TIME!!
As a result my confidence was shot to pieces and I just started praying "HELP ME LORD" and "DROP ME IN A BIG HOLE LORD" and also "LORD LET ALL THE POWER FAIL...NOW!!".
Of Course God did the opposite and made the Worship go on longer than usual.
Strangely everyone at the service came up to me afterwards and said it was the most annointed worship time we had led in weeks! HUH!!! Was I at the same service?? But I guess Jesus does use our weaknesses and troubles and turns them around for his glory.

I am rambling...I just wanted to know how many other Worship musicians/Leaders have had a similar mess up or crisis of confidence.

God bless.

Hi Lee

You are not alone!
Only this last Sunday evening I had a pretty poor time leading worship; I sang some wrong lyrics and hit several bum notes during the various songs, plus the band was somewhat smaller than usual, which makes things seem that much worse.
Hey, guess what? we're all human!
I think the main thing is to not let it eat you up.
I try to use a bad situation as a launchpad for something better, so if I hit a real bum note, for example, then I don't pull a strained face to make my pain clear to everyone, I think "OK, that was a shame, but now let's pick things up and move on".
Life really is too short to dwell on this stuff.

Most weeks!
I think so often we want to play well but often feel we 'let God down'. yet so often people think the worship was awesome even if we feel we have not been very good. We just need to 'let go and let God'.

i was doing highest and greatest, and i went into the chorus singing "you are the greatest, you are the greatest" i just smiled in a joking way to myself and kept on playing, i then did it again at a worship team meeting

its all heart people. even when we do something so distracting that eveyone notices, actually it HELPS to connect you with the people you are leading, and saves this whole 'us and them' thing developing.

We get too worried about how good or bad we are. - though I feel your pain.!

Keep going, dig in, look up!

thanks for sharing!

I think I said elsewhere, I introduced a new song and forgot how the chorus went halfway through the verse so had to make it up in the end and sing my own version.

totally identifiy with this. we've got a new vicar at our church and i was really nervous about leading worship last sunday as was the first time on in weeks. we decided to play 'here is love' pre-service (the passion hymn project version) as we weren't confident with it so it's good to get an extra practice and i got so confused with multiple time signatures that i couldn't work it out at all. turned round to the drummer in the tag between verses (he's also a worship leader) and he couldn't remember it either. we gracefully finished the song early and had to run off and find another worship leader to remind us how the song went so that we could use it. Drew a total blank!!! Felt the whole thing ended up being a disaster (especially as PA went horribly wrong) and yet loads of people said they got loads from the worship. such a good thing God is REALLY faithful and takes our measley offering and makes it awesome for Him!!!

Totally agree with all thats been said, I've found it very true at times when I think I've done a 'measly' job, God has used it amazingly!

Aside slightly - does the anointing song you were talking about go "Anointing fall on me, anointing fall on me, in the power of the Holy Ghost, fall on me, anointing fall on me"?

Yes Ben thats the song! Not overly difficult but I just got really lost for some mad reason! We also did a new song that I mucked up because I mucked the anointing one up!!

I dont think God minds but I just want to really do my BEST for God all the time...cant always though I guess!!!

Yeahh I totally know what you mean. What were the chords that you used when you played it? - We've been wanting to bring it in at my church for a while but can only find dodgy chords!

Sounds like the anointing fell on you...you got what you were singing about eh???? You just weren't aware of it!!

Oh man - you wouldn't believe how many times this has happened to me. My verdict is really that God is in control, He uses us, not the other way round, and He also doesn't let my incompetence get in His way. Gives you a heck of a safety net.

Hi Lee

I was leading worship on my own the other week - and had brought my guitar in from the cold outside into a warm room. and would it stay in tune?! nah!

I had to keep retuning - but was able to talk a bit about when God turns the heat up in our lives, everything that we thought was in tune suddenly sounds all wrong - so we have to go back to the Father to get ourselves tuned up again.

What was funny is that a visitor that morning was really blessed by the 'reality' and 'imperfection' of the music.

No matter what is going on I try to always believe Romans 8:28 and just keep ploughing! The key is to always keep the focus on Jesus, and hear if God is saying anything to you about what is going on - and use that to point back to Him.

And don't forget to laugh!
