For our Worship on Sunday just gone we chose to play a song, "Annointing Fall on me", a great song with a lovely Jazz vibe to it. I had never heard it before let alone played it and so on our practice on saturday morning we ran through it once for my benefit. On Sunday we played it, only my second ever time playing the song, and I messed it up...BIG TIME!!
As a result my confidence was shot to pieces and I just started praying "HELP ME LORD" and "DROP ME IN A BIG HOLE LORD" and also "LORD LET ALL THE POWER FAIL...NOW!!".
Of Course God did the opposite and made the Worship go on longer than usual.
Strangely everyone at the service came up to me afterwards and said it was the most annointed worship time we had led in weeks! HUH!!! Was I at the same service?? But I guess Jesus does use our weaknesses and troubles and turns them around for his glory.

I am rambling...I just wanted to know how many other Worship musicians/Leaders have had a similar mess up or crisis of confidence.

God bless.

funnily enough I've just been watching match of the day and sometimes the shots you don't hit cleanly are the ones that go in. I wonder if that's an analogy???

Good point Nathaniel - and to expound further, it could also mean my football career is still a possibility! I can scuff shots with the best of 'em... :)

i guess it's all about passion! if you play with the right motivations and greatest intentions then that's when it works out... it doesn't necessarily have to be the most skilled!!

Totally know what you mean. But I also totally believe that God takes what we give Him as our best in worship of Him and uses it to minister to others.

And I've definitely found that the times we've been most worried about the worship, they have been the times its gone "best" because we've been so reliant on God and surrounded the whole service with prayer

On this theme, has anyone found that when the rehearsal goes badly, it seems that the worship time is even sweeter, but when the rehearsal goes well, the actual worship time seems to be lacking (muscially anyway)??
This happened to me Sunday night when leading worship. Although it could just be my level of expectation being all over the place!!

I guess it could be a truism.. but I wouldn't want to build a theology on it.
I think anything which reminds us that we have to rely on God (which would include being ill prepared, grim practice, arguments with spouse/children/elders ;) ) is helpful. this morning, I had a great time, though I was full of cold/bronchitus and a cracked rib from bodyboarding. I did a new song (that I knew some people would instantly dislike) but there was a real buzz in the air, and in my weakness, he was definately strong.. God is good. :)

Out of curiosity Rob, what is the new song, and why did you know that some people would dislike it? Do you mean just the sheer fact you were bringing in a new song was enough for them to dislike it or is it to do with the song itself?

hehehe. ah..

words are:

Oh I ain’t gonna worry
If I expose my tummy
And my belly button starts to show
With my hands up high and waving
I will show that I am praising
And my faith and confidence will grow!

Yes Lord, I’ll praise you,
with my hands outstretched to you.
Yes Lord, I’ll praise you
it’s the least that I can do.

1st, it SOUNDS like a childrens song..
2nd, it talks about a part of the body most people wouldn't want included in any thoughts related with God.
3rd, it required some kind of response (arms aloft)
4th, some would consider it had little or no theological content and would be unworthy of inclusion in corporate praise
5th, I wrote it, and some people don't like songs they are never gonna sing anywhere else.

incidentally, less people disliked it than I thought would, but at the wider leaders meeting this evening there was one significant suggestion that such a song was not to 'taste', but the fact that lots of people are talking about it, I view as a positive :)

Dude! this song rocks!!! :)

Personally I can't see myself leading worship with it (hehe) - but perhaps I lack your courage!!
