Profile Information

Home Town:
Whickham, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Home Church:
Fellside Methodist Church
Musical Gift(s):
Lead Vocals, Electro-Acoustic Guitar, Songwriting, Recording, Teaching vocal technique and stagecraft
About Me:
I've been in the Christian and secular music scene for a long time! Started off with the band 'Crossfire' in the south, then lead vocals with the band 'Heart & Soul' in the north-east. Sang in pubs, clubs and hotels for a while as a secular solo artist, and then released the album 'Lifetime' under the name JULIE LORD. That was the name I was using in the secular scene - it had to be changed for personal security, so I continued with it for the blues/jazz-funk album which tried to bridge the gap between CCM and secular audiences. Had reasonable success with the album - got it played in the States anyway! That was nearly 10 years ago now.

Now, I've gone back to my real name, my acoustic roots, and God has led me headlong into Worship music, as a lead vocal, electro acoustic guitarist, and occasional (but getting more frequent by the day) worship leader. But .. I still like to perform an acoustic set as a singer / songwriter in secular and Christian venues - so, any offers of gigs would be most welcome!

I'm a vocal coach / singing teacher by profession and work for Northumberland Music Service, teaching for Rockschool exams in five high schools. I also coach bands in vocal technique and stagecraft, and have been asked to do this for the county bands in Northumberland. Am thinking of using my skills for Worship Band mentoring - but don't know how to get started, any ideas?
Favourite Christian Music
Titus (I'm biased - I coached them!); Nothing else in particular - I like things that are well produced, such as Hillsong; Amy Grant;
Favourite Secular Music
Steely Dan; Eagles; Annie Lennox; Sheryl Crow
Favourite Bible Verse
John 16 : 33

Thanks Julie, I will give the exercises a go and see what happens. I have asked Julia for any copies of any "bad" songs, but she's not sure whether she has them still!
I do sometimes suffer with sinus problems, and have recently had Labrynthitis, so my ears will have been affected. As you say, it is hard to relax, when you are straining to hear yourself, so I'm sure if we can get the foldback right, then that will help.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again.

Hi Julie,
I wonder if you could give me some advice? I am a singer at Daniel and Julia's church, and sometimes lead the group if Daniel is away. I have been singing for years, with a ladies choir and started out in the church choir! Everyone says that I have a lovely voice, but, last year there was some debate as to whether I was going flat some weeks. This obviously knocked my confidence and I have tried very hard not to do this. I feel that I am good at singing, and do think that this is something God has given me and I would like to do it properly.
Daniel mentioned again that he thought that I was still occassionally off key, but that it might be something to do with the foldback or where I stand, or pitching against his voice! We are going to meet at Church to see if we can come up with any solutions, but, I just wondered if you had any tips or vocal exercises that I could do to help, I am not saying that I don't go off, we all do at times. By the way I am top soprano, and I know that I struggle to sustain the low notes.
Thanks
Anita

Hi Julie,

I didn't log in until after midnight. Steve Lane left a comment during the Day. He would have been the next person to invite to HMI Anonymous! anyway so I left him an invite to join us.

Was it you who wanted to look at my christmas song - I can't remember. if it was you, send me your email address and I will send you a PDF. Not got a sound file at the moment, unfortunately. if it wasn't you, then I've broken my promise to someone, can't remember who!!

Thanks - I was just wondering what vocalist were talking about – just being nosey (sad but there you go) - then found there was a tread on Monitoring woes. Since I am a sound guy I wanted to leave a response. I did find it very interesting, as I am usually on the wrong end of foldback. I also liked reading about how to warm you voice up and the issue of the hymn after the sermon (i have several times wanted to get rid of it when I preached but did not dare).
It is always good to see other peoples perspective.

Hi I've been in Grimsby just over a year, and have been working flat out in my full time job, and have been working in the background, in my church! So I haven't had much chance to do any exploring of the whole area I now live in!! But I'm sure I will come across him at some point. Thanks though, for your help!!
